Magnemite used Sonic Boom!

"Fixed 20 HP damage... no special effects... hm.  I got nothing."

For Game-Art-HQ's Pokemon 20th Anniversary Tribute, contributing artists would illustrate all 151 (152 if you count Missingno.) in the original Kanto dex performing one of their attacks / abilities.  They're almost finished with all spots taken at this point, but I say get involved with the community anyway - it's a nice humble hub for artists and gamers to get together!

I've covered so many unique types with the Pokémon and moves I claimed to do.  I also somehow ended up doing a lot of globular ones considering people didn't want them very much. xD Magnemite was one of them, with one spot open by the time I was done with Jynx, so I looked over its Generation 1 movepool and went for a move that was so surprisingly challenge to portray with its limited movement - Sonic Boom.  A fixed attack that does 20HP of damage (and can somehow hit ghost types as well in Generation 1), it's a nice burst of splash damage for when you're starting out on your journey as a Pokémon trainer.

Magnemite itself was fun to practice more metal shading and seeing how that would work out on something entirely with metallic surfaces.  However, its minimal flexibility made it really tricky to try and portray the move, though I did get the idea of it generating shockwave energy from its magnets and spinning around to generate it - kinda similar to how it was portrayed in the Best Wishes animé, though with a bit more kick to push as an end result.  I did however find it really fun to interpret the spin without the limits of GIMP / Procreate's blur tools - so many layers, perspective tryouts and layer masks went into making sure this result would stick.  This is a technique that I really need to document for future use!

Still, what a journey it had been to illustrate a bunch of Pokémon for a site project.  Here's to Christmas as the entire gallery would get unleashed!

Pokemon Tribute: 20% of the galleries are done!
The first Pokemon and their attacks are drawn and submitted already, thanks a lot @ everyone participating!
Update 10.10. 32 of the 151 Pokemon Galleries are done now, this means that 119 are left and till christmas we have 75 days. Uh oh...will we be able to catch 'em all?  O-o
Update, 06.09. I started to write the galleries for the Pokemon, the links to them are getting added now in the list below, the project will be published completely on Christmas this year.
